Gastric Torsion-Volvulus is a condition where the stomach twists and causes the trapped gas to
swell the stomach. Torsion-Volvulus are terms used depending on how the stomach twists.
This is an emergency situation that requires immediate medical care.
Prevention may be accomplished by feeding small meals vs one large one, and limiting vigorous
exercise around feeding time. Feeding lightly moisten kibble, canned food or table scraps with the
kibble may also help. Dogs with easy going temperments are less likely to bloat.
Treatment must be very quick if you suspect bloat.
Prophylatic Gastropexy is a surgical procedure that attaches the stomach in a fixed position so
twisting cannot occur. Dogs who have bloated should have surgery to see what damage has
been done internally.
Symptoms are unresponsiveness, restlessness, pacing, lying down and getting up repeatedly,
trying to vomit with little or no results, or small amounts of foamy vomit, excessive drooling and
panting, arched back, a stiff walk & pale gums. You may or may not notice swelling of the
stomach. You may notice all or some of these symptoms. This is a condition of many deep
chested breeds.
Risks: dog over 99 pounds have a 20% risk of developing bloat.
