Down Boy!
Teach this after your dog has a pretty good grasp of the sit command.

Have your dog sit, praise and or pet him,
wait three of four seconds
and say,  "DOWN".

Press gently and firmly on his shoulders.
You may need to pull his front feet out from under him at first.
Praise him when he goes into the down position.  Should he try to get up tell him,
"No, stay."  Praise him when he stays in position.

Generally dogs are just as lazy as we are....and they enjoy lying down.
A tip:
Speak softly, gently & quietly when giving a verbal command...
your dog will hear you just as well as if you were speaking
normally, but I find he listens more carefully when he must pay
attention to my commands.  Sometimes I even whisper.  Don't
forget all that praise..it works so well, and he loves you for it!
