Distichia are abnormal hairs that grow from the oil glands of the eye lids.
Distichia may or may not be irritating depending on the
placement, length and stiffness of the hair.
Signs of discomfort are squinting and rubbing the eyes, tearing and redness.
Breeds in which this is common are:
Shih Tzu, American Cocker, Toy and Miniature Poodle,
Golden Retriever, Sheetland Sheepdog, Miniature long-haired
Dachshund, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, English Bulldog & Lhasa Apso.
This can be corrected by surgery, if neccessary, though new ones may
appear from a different area if the surgery is done before age three, or the dog
is a Shih Tzu.
