PRA or PROGRESSIVE RETINAL APTROPHY
is one of a number of degenerative eye diseases that occur in dogs,
Collies are one of many breeds that are affected.

PRA is not painful, and occurs usually as an early-onset disease, occuring by one year of age.
There is another type of PRA, called Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy, that can occur
at a later age.  This disease starts as night-blindness (difficulty seeing in the dark) and progresses
over months or years to total blindness.

There is no DNA test for PRA at this time for Collies.

There is a test - called ERG - that is capable of determining if a dog
has PRA, even at a very young age (six weeks), and before any outward signs are shown.

Eye exams, by a certified C.E.R.F. opthamologist, done yearly can help determine
if a dog is showing signs of PRA.  Some breeds show very little or no changes
until the disease has progressed to it's later stages.
