A white Collie is 'white-factored'.

Look at the white on the rear legs of these puppies, two have a lot, and the sable has less, but is still white-facotered. The blue merle has two white patches on her back which is normal..
A white merle Collie is NOT 'white-factored'. When two merles are bred together is causes the color of the puppy to dilute the color to white with washed out patches of the genetic coat color.
Any of the above Collie colors can carry the white-factor gene. This is the gene that allows a white or mostly white puppy to be born from the following breedings: -------------------------- * White-factored Collie to a White-factored Colllie * White-factored Collied to a White Collie * White factored Colllie to a non-whtie-factored Collie * White Collie to a White Collie (all puppies from a white to white breeding will be white Collies, with varying sizes of colored patches, or none in their coats) Some white factored dogs may not show any indication of being white-factored, though usually they do. They will produce white factored or white puppies.

These two pictures are of the same dog. Notice how different the coat pattern is on each side. He is a champion.

All of these dogs are blue merles.
