The Smooth Collie is exactly like the rough-coated Collie, except for coat-type. The smooth Collie coat is short, flat, dense with good texture and an abundance of undercoat. Grooming is not as extensive as with the longer coat.

The Rough Collie has a full, well-fitting straight outer coat. It should have a thick, soft & furry undercoat, making it difficult to see the skin. A coat that is soft, open, or curly are penalized in the show ring. The texture, quantity, and the extent to which the coat fits the individual dog is important.
Though grooming is important to both varieties, the rough coated Collie does require a regular schedule of grooming. ~ ~ ~ A minimum of once a week is recommended, though your dog will enjoy it more often.

Just a note: If you breed a Smooth Collie to a Rough Collie you will get both rough & smooth coated puppies in the same litter.
